About Deborah Surgi
Deborah Surgi is the athletic director at Hockaday. Deb comes to the School with more than 35 years of teaching and coaching experience, most recently as the Director of Athletics at The Baldwin School, a PK-12 all-girls' independent school in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Her extensive expertise leading sports staffs and serving on administrative teams at independent schools will benefit students, parents, and coaches by fostering a unified athletic community.
Surgi began her career in athletics and education at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, an all-girls' PK-12 independent school, where she coached varsity volleyball and taught health. Deb was recognized into the school's Hall of Fame in 2015 and again in 2018 with her 1991 State Championship Team, as well as the New Orleans Prep Hall of Fame in 2013.
She was also named District Coach of the Year five times, Times Picayune All-Metro Coach of the Year three times, Louisiana High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year three times, Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year three times, Louisiana High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year three times, Louisiana High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year three times, Louisiana High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year three times, Louisiana High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year three times,
Coach of the Year by Sportswriters and an East All-Star Coach She guided the Sacred Heart Cardinals to three state championships, one state semi-final, and five consecutive district championships. Her high school coaching record was 204-49 with a winning percentage of.806 She was designated one of the 200 Most Influential New Orleansians in Sports in 2006. From 1994 to 1996, Deb also founded Loyola University's first women's collegiate volleyball team and recruitment program. The 28-27 record over two years included two tournament victories.
Deb relocated from New Orleans to Moorestown Friends School in 1996 to head the athletic program, becoming the first female athletic director in Burlington County, New Jersey. Seven new sports and 14 new teams were added during her tenure, and she was a member of the project committee for a new Arts and Athletic Field House. Deb was a member of the senior administration staff at Baldwin and was in charge of the interscholastic athletic and physical education program. She was an active member of their project team, raising $25 million for their athletic complex and establishing Baldwin's Blue Gray Parent Club. She worked across the school to construct a ten-year athletic strategic plan that incorporated input from all stakeholders and established targets to ensure program sustainability. She was in charge of the physical education staff and 67 coaching jobs at Baldwin. She also coached their varsity volleyball team, which had a two-year record of 20-12, including one tournament title and two consecutive postseason appearances. In 2018, she won Baldwin's Award for Exemplary Service during her time there.
